Banlieue Network’s Steering Committee met for the first time on Friday 14th December 2012 at the Institut Français, London. Organised by Dr Christina Horvath (Oxford Brookes University, English and Modern Languages) and Dr Juliet Carpenter (Oxford Brookes University, Planning), the workshop “Care for the Future: Thinking Forward through the Past” aimed to bring together the members of the founding members for a day of debate and discussion, ten artists and scholars from the UK, France, Belgium and Germany who work in the fields of Literature, French Studies, Urban Geography, Urban Governance, Urban Planning, Linguistics, Photography, Politics and Sociology, explored the possibilities of an interdisciplinary research collaboration in the field of segregated communities, outreach to non-academic audiences and strategies designed to fight negative clichés attached to disadvantaged urban areas. Delegates also addressed organisational issues, forthcoming events as well as possible ways of disseminating research outputs, promoting the network’s activities and making the network sustainable.
